Tutorial:

You can watch video tutorials above, or read the steps below,
which explains how to:

  1. EXPORT SOUNDSLIDES
  2. POST TO AFS SERVER
  3. TEST IN A BROWSER
  4. GET EMBED CODE
  5. POST ON TUMBLR AND CLASS SITE
—————————————————————————————————-

1. EXPORT SOUNDSLIDES:

Right now your Soundslides project is only on your computer, and you need to export it so that you can publish in a form that can be understood by the web.

Soudslides does not export a movie file that you can just upload to a place like YouTube. It exports multiple files to your computer that have to be uploaded to a server on the internet. You will use the university server for this, called AFS. But first, you have to export your Soundslides project.
In Soundslides, go to File/Export and a folder will be created inside the folder that stores your Ssoundslides project folder with all of the files Soundslides needs. Open this folder and inside it you will see another folder called “publish_to_web.” This is all you’ll need to put your project online.

2. POST TO AFS SERVER:

Now, upload your slide show to your MSU AFS server space.

You must upload the entire publish_to_web folder to your AFS space for Soundslides to work on the internet.
You cannot upload a Soundslides project directly to our class WordPress.com site. It must be uploaded to a separate server space first (like to a domain, but we’re using the university AFS space for this project).
What is your AFS space? This is your personal MSU online server space, and every student has one. You only need your MSU login and password to access it.

(Note! Do not log into the AFS space (afs.msu.edu) using your own computer, such as your laptop. It may log you in and you will get the four folders, including the Web folder, mentioned below, but copying your Soundslides folder to the web this way will not work!)
If you prefer not use the CommArts lab Macs, then you will need to use another sofware to transfer the Soundslides folder to the web. Filezilla for the PC, or Fetch, for the Mac. But I cannot offer you support in this

How to upload Soundslides to AFS using the lab computers in CommArts

NOTE! THIS WILL NOT WORK WITH NETFILES. YOU THINK IT WILL, BUT IT WON’T!! IT MUST BE DONE BY ACCESSING THE AFS SERVER SPACE AND MOST RELIABLE BY USING ONE OF THE LAB COMPUTERS.

  1. Log into the computer
  2. Scroll down to“Connect to server” from the “Go” menu along the top of your screen.
  3. Type in the address afs.msu.edu and click the Connect button  (image below).

Log in with your MSU mail ID and password.
  4. Click on your MSU mail name (ID) to open your personal AFS space.
  5. A window will open with four folders. You want the folder called “Web
  6. Move that window a bit to the side and find the Soundslides project window that has the publish_to_web folder.
  7. Select the folder called “publish _to_web” and drag it across windows from where it is over to and on top of the “Web” folder in your AFS space. Let go. All of the files will copy into the folder.
  8. You may want to rename the “publish _to_web” folder something that reflects what your slide show is about. To do so, double click on the words “publish _to_web” and type in a new name, but make sure it is ONE word or if multiple words, you will need to use the underscore ( _ ) character to link the words together.
  9. Now, test your slide show in a browser! There are two URLs you can type in to see it and both will work. The only difference between them is one has the word “user” in it and the other uses the ~ symbol instead.
—————————————————————————————————-

3. TEST IT IN A BROWSER: You now need to type a URL address into a browser like Firefox.

1. Open a browser like Firefox, Safari, etc. Probably some page like Google.com will open up.
2. In the text field at the top of the browser, delete whatever text is in there that begins with “http://…” This is where you will type in the URL for your Soundslides project. All this “address” does is link (point the internet) to your Soundslides project in your personal AFS space.
3. This means that all of your URL addresses will be different, since you all have different user ID’s. But here is the formula for typing it in. First type in:

http://msu.edu/ (This is the same for all of you!)

4. Next type in the tilde symbol ( ~ ) which is located on the top left of the Mac keyboard. Next to that type in your MSU user ID followed by the forward slash sign ( / ). My user ID is gudek, so if I were typing this it would look like this:

http://msu.edu/~gudek/

Finally, type in the name of the folder that your Soundslides project is in inside Web folder on your AFS space. If you left it called “publish_to_web,” then the address you’re typing would look like this:

http://msu.edu/~gudek/publish_to_web

This is your final address. BUT, if I changed the folder name from publish_to_web to another name, like bullfight, then the address would look like this

http://msu.edu/~gudek/bullfight

5. Hit ‘Enter’ on the keyboard and you’ll see your slideshow! (If you don’t see it, check the spelling of your folder name and make sure there are no spaces or oddities in the URL address. If it still doesn’t work, then try naming your folder in your AFS space something different.
—————————————————————————————————-

4. GET EMBED CODE:

Step three above gave you a URL address, but now you need to convert that to HTML code, so that you can embed your slideshow onto your blog.

To get the embed code, you have to use a specila Soundslides “tool” that they provide for this purpose.
Open the window above by clicking on the image or the link
http://tools.soundslides.com/embed
1. You will see the window below. Copy and paste the link (URL address) from Step 3 above into the text field called “Slide Show URL” box. Click the “Continue” button.
2. Later, you will select the embed code in the window below and copy it (it should appear blue, which means it is automatically selected, so just right-click and select copy, or go to the File menu at top and select Copy)

5. POST ON TUMBLR AND CLASS SITE:

First, post the Soundslides embed code on a news Tumblr blog post, then paste the link to the post on the class site.

1. Sign up for a NEW Tumblr account. Don’t use your personal one. In the box on the right that asks for a URL (what you want to call your blog) enter the last two numbers of your group number (02, 36, etc.)
2. You will arrive at the Tumblr “dashboard.” Click on the Text icon at top left.
3. Write the name of your Soundslides presentation in the “Title”  field, and cut and paste your full group number and all group member names in the text field. Then click on the tiny blue “HTML” tag in the gray tool bar on the right.
4. This will open up the HTML window where you will paste the embed code for your Soundslides slideshow.
There will be some text at the top of this window, which is just the formatting for your group names. Leave this alone.
Go back to your Soundslides tool that gave you the embed code, copy it and then paste it below the text at the top of the window.
Click the “Update” button.
5. This will take you back to the previous screen and it will look like you didn’t do anything. Don’t worry. Click on the “Create post” button.

6. This will take you back to your “Dashboard” and you will still not see your Soundslides presentation! You must click on the name of your Tumblr blog on the right menu.

7. This will take you to your blog post.

Your group names, number the title of your slideshow and the slideshow shoiuld all appear. (The slideshow may appear too large. Just leave it like this. (I’ve already shown you too much.) OR you can choose a different Tumblr template that will fit it if you like.
You need to isolate this post before posting it to the class website. Click in the gray bar directly under the slideshow. A new window will open with your slideshow. Copy the link in the address bar at the top of the window (not shown here). It will begin with http://…
8. Finally, log into the WordPress project posting site (using studentjrn203), open the Photo narrative project page. Then:
1. Paste the Tumblr link into a comment box.
Then, above the link:
2. Add the title of your soundslides presentation
3. Add your group number
4. Add group names
